ASPIRIN

HOW DOES IT WORK? Aspirin is a salicylate, which means it inhibits pain by inhibiting the body’s production of an enzyme that allows nerves to feel pain (this is an extremely simplified explanation). Aspirin also reduces inflammation, which makes it particularly effective for treating headaches.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS? Aspirin can cause gastrointestinal bleeding to varying degrees, depending on how much you take. Consuming alcohol with the aspirin exacerbates the situation. Aspirin also inhibits blood clotting in some types of capillaries. Some people are simply intolerant of aspirin: They can experience hives, difficulty breathing, and other symptoms. Children should never be given aspirin without a doctor’s advice, because aspirin can increase their risk of the potentially fatal Reye’s syndrome. Aspirin also can increase uric acid levels, which is of special concern for people with gout or hyperuricemia. For the average individual, aspirin taken in moderate doses doesn’t affect uric acid secretion. (Sometimes aspirin can be quite beneficial—see page 114.)
